MEETING THE PROPHET ﷺ IN WAKEFULNESS
Question:
As-Salam Alaykum Imam Fakhruddin.
What is the meaning of the statement that Shaykh Ahmad Tijani met the Prophet ﷺ in wakefulness?
Answer:
Know that seeing the Prophet (SAW) "while awake" refers to a spiritual experience you have when your soul takes over your body and you see the Spiritual world of the barzakh and its inhabitants
So your eyes are still open but you see what others don't see. Just like the Prophet (SAW) used to see the Angels and Jinn when others around him won't.
The best example is how he (SAW) met and interacted with all the prophets on the night of the Mi'raj. It wasn't a dream. It was real.
Of course, when a Wali claims he saw the Prophet (SAW) while awake, it refers to seeing the Spirit of the Prophet (SAW). It doesn't mean the actual body leaves the grave. No one claims that.
Note also that this spiritual experience was confirmed by great scholars of Islam such as Ibn-Hajar al-Makki, al-Ghazali, Ibn-al-Hajj, al-Qastalani, al-Shakhawi and al-Suyuti (who authored a whole treatise proving its possibility and actual occurrence as well).
Numerous Awliya-Allah were honored with this blessed experience over 1400 years. Many books mention that. I have a book by a Shadhili Shaykh from Egypt who lived 500 years ago, in which he collected numerous incidents of the Awliya encountering the Prophet (SAW) while awake.
The Prophet (SAW) himself predicted this when he said, as narrated by Bukhari:
"Whoever sees me in a dream shall see me in Wakefullness, for Satan cannot take my shape".
Al-Humdulillah, Shaykh Sidi Ahmad al-Tijani (RA) was known to see the Nabi (SAW) while awake, quite often. This was due to his intense love and yearning for the Messenger of Allah (SAW) and because he used to recite thousands of Salawat everyday, while avoiding any other thoughts.
Many Tijanis who follow his method experience the same. However, its not only limited to Tijanis.
