DA ‘ĀNĪ ILĀ HUBBI (MAKES ME YEARN)

من ديوانه ( مناسك أهل الوداد في مدح خير العباد )

دَعَانِي إِلَى حُبِّ العَرُوضِ شُهُودُ...سُهَادِي وَحِبْرِي وَالطُّرُوسُ شُهُودُ

Da’ānī ilā ḥubbi-l ‘arūḍi shuhudun # suhādī wa ḥibrī wa-t ṭurūsi shuhūdu

My witnessing of him (SAW) makes me yearn for his land! And my pen, paper and staying up at night are all witnesses (of my love for him).

دُمُوعِي عَلَى الخَدَّيْنِ كَالغَرْبِ مَوهِنًا...مَعَ الشَّيْبِ وَالأَجْنَاسُ ثَمَّ رُقُودُ

Dumū’i ‘alā khaddayni kā-l gharbi mauhinā # ma’a-sh shaybi wa-l ajnāsi thumma ruqūdu

My gray hair, and the tears rolling down my cheeks while all people are asleep...

دَلِيلٌ عَلى مَا قَدْ دَهَانِي وَإِنَّنِي...عَرَانِيَ حَالٌ فِي الوِدَادِ شَدِيدُ

Dalīlun ‘alā mā qad dahānī wa inanī # ‘aratnī hālun fī-l widādi shadīdu

Are all proofs of what has afflicted me! For the level of my passion is great indeed.

دَهَانِي غَرَامٌ حَرَّمَ النَّوْمَ مَوْهِنًا...وَحَلَّلَ حَرْقِي وَالغَرَامُ وَقُودُ

Dahānī gharāmun ḥarrama-n nawma mawhinān # wa hallala ḥarqī wa-l gharāmu waqūdu

My passion for him (SAW) has taken away my sleep. And has become the fuel that burns my being!

لَقَدْ حَرَّمَ الوَجْدُ الحَلاَلَ مُحَلِّلاً...حَرَامًا وَهَلْ هَذَا القَضَاءُ سَدِيدُ

Laqad ḥarrama-l wajdu-l ḥalāla muḥallilān # ḥarāmān wa hal hādhā-l qaḍāu sadīdu

And it has the made the permissible (i.e. sleep and joy) forbidden on me; and permitted upon me the forbidden (i.e. sadness and greaving). Is this a fair sentence?!

فَإِنْ حَادَ عَنْ نَهْجِ الرَّسُولِ فَإِنَّنِي...عَلَى نَهْجِهِ مَا عِشْتُ فَهْوَ حَمِيدُ

Fa-in ḥāda ‘an nahiji-r rasūli fa-innanī # ‘alā nah’jihi mā ‘ishtu fahwa ḥamīdu

But! If my passion strays from the path of the Prophet, then I will stick to his path as long as I live. And that is the praiseworthy way.

أَسِيرُ غَرَامٍ لاَ أَزَالُ مُتَيَّمًا...وَعَنْ نَهْجِ خَيْرِ الخَلْقِ لَسْتُ أَحِيدُ

Asīru gharāmin lā azālu mutayyamān # wa ‘an nahiji khayri-l khalqi lastu lastu aḥīdu

Though I am the prisoner of love, and I remain passionate; I will not stray from the path of the Best of Creation.

إِذَا سَارَ خَيْرُ النَّاسِ سِرْتُ وَرَاءَهُ...وَإِنْ حَلَّ يَوْمًا فَالمَسِيرُ بَعِيدُ

Idhā sāra khayru-n nāsi sir’tu warā-ahu # wa in halla yawmān fa-l musīru ba’īdu

And when the best of Creation walks, I walk behind him. And if he stops, then my walk also stops!

عَلَيْهِ صَلاَةُ اللهِ ثُمَّ سَلاَمُهُ...بِكُلِّ مُرَادَاتِي الكَرِيمُ يَجُودُ

‘Alayhi ṣalātu-llahi thumma salāmuhu # bi-kulli murādātī-l karīmu yajūdu

May the blessings and salutations of Allah be upon him. And may the Generous Lord grant me all my wishes!

عَلَيْهِ صَلاَةُ اللهِ ثُمَّ سَلاَمُهُ...تَكُونُ لَنَا الحُسْنَى وَبَعْدُ مَزِيدُ

‘Alayhi ṣalātu-llahi thumma salāmuhu # takūnu lanā-l ḥusnā wa ba’adu mazīdu

May the blessings and salutations of Allah be upon him. Through which we gain a good ending and more!

عَلَيْهِ صَلاَةُ اللهِ ثُمَّ سَلاَمُهُ...وَآلٍ وَصَحْبٍ مَا الفُؤَادُ عَمِيدُ

‘Alayhi ṣalātu-llahi thumma salāmuhu # wa ālin wa ṣahbin mā-l fu’ādu ‘amīdu

May the blessings and salutations of Allah be upon him. And upon his Family and Companions, as long as the heart cries in his love!
