THE POEM OF SEEKING FORGIVENESS

- By Sahib-al-Faydah Shaykh Ibrahim Niasse (RA) -

(From his Diwan: Miftah al-‘Atiyyah)

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ الْعَظِيمَ الَّذِي

لَـيْسَ إِلـٰــهٌ غَيْرُهُ يَغْفِرُ

Astaghfiru Allaha al-ʿAẓima al-ladhī

laysa Ilāhun ghayruhu yaghfiru

I seek forgiveness from Allah the Great!

Besides whom there is no God that can forgive (our sins)!

سُبْحَانَهُ الْغَفَّارُ سُبْحَانَهُ

سُبْحَانَهُ السَّتَّارُ عَيْبِيَ يَسْتُرُ

Subḥānahu-l Ghaffāru subḥānahu

Subḥānahu-s Sattāru ʿaybiya yasturu

Sanctified is He, the Most Forgiving One! How Sanctified!

Sanctified is He, the Concealer of my sins!

أَلْبَسَنِي مِنْ سِتْرِهِ سَابِغاً

سُبْحَانَهُ يَعْفُو إِذْ يَقْدِرُ

Albasanī min sitrihi sābighan

Subḥānahu yaʿafu ʾidh yaqdīru

He covered me with the Garment of His Concealment!

Sanctified is He! He pardons even when he can punish!

حادَتْ ظُنُونٌ عَنْكَ يَا بَهْجَتِي

إِذْ كَلَّ عَنْ إِدْرَاكِكَ الْأَبْصُرُ

Ḥādat ẓunūnun ʿanka yā bahjatī

ʾidh kalla ʿan ʾidrākika al-ʾabṣuru

Lost are our thoughts when pondering of You O my Joy!

As our visions are unable to comprehend You!

هذَا عُبَيْدٌ خَائِفٌ مُرْهَبٌ

وَ لَا لَهُ غَيْرُكَ: مَنْ يَنْصُرُ

Hadhā ʿubaydun khāʾifun murhabun

wa lā lahu ghayruka: man yanṣuru

This is (your) Slave, frightened & fearful (of Your wrath)…

And he has no one to save him but You (o Allah)!

وَ هَمُّهُ زَادَ عَلَى وَجْدِهِ

لَوْلَاكَ يَا رَحْمٰـنُ لَا يُنْظَرُ

Wa hammuhu zāda ʿalā wajdihi

lawlāka yā Raḥmānu lā yunẓaru

And his worries have overwhelmed his passion!

Besides Your Mercy O Most Merciful One, he has no relief!

هَبْ لِي حُلُولِي طَيْبَةَ الْمُصْطَفَى

وَ حَجُّ فَرْضٍ مِنْكُمُ تَيْسُرُ

Hab lī ḥulūlī ṭayyibata al-Muṣṭafā

wa ḥajjun farḍin minkum taysuru

Grant me to visit Taybah (the Purified City) of the Chosen Prophet!

And to perform the obligatory Hajj! All eased through Your Grace!

صَلَّى عَلَيْهِ اللهُ مَعَ صَحْبِهِ

وَالْآلِ مَا أَمْطَارُهُ تَمْطُرُ

Ṣallā ʿalayhi Allāhu maʿa ṣaḥbihi

wa-l ʾāli mā ʾamṭāruhu tamṭuru

May Allah bless him and his Companions…

And his Family, as long as His rains shower (this Earth)!

DA‘AUTU RASŪLA RABBA-L KHALQI TURRĀ

I CALLED ON THE MESSENGER OF THE LORD (SAW)

A Poem by Shaykh-al-Islam Ibrahim Niasse (RA)

(From: Al-Kanz al-Masun)

دَعَوْتُ رَسُولَ رَبِّ الْخَلْقِ طُرَّا

لِيَشْفَعَ فِيَّ وَ يَدْفَعَ مَا أَضَرَّا

Da'awtu Rasula Rabbi l-khalqi ṭurrā

li yashfa'a fīyya wa yadfa' mā adarrā

I called on the Messenger of the Lord of all Creation (SAW)...

To intercede for me & ward off all harms!

مُحَمَّدُ خَيْرُ خَلْقِ اللَّهِ طُرًّا

مُمِدَّ جَمِيعِهِمْ سِرًّا وَ جَهْرَا

Muḥammadu khayru khalqi llāhi ṭurrān

mummidda jamī'ihim sirrān wa jahrā

Muhammad! The Best of all Creation...

And their supporter, inwardly & outwardly!

بِأَحْمَدَ قَدْ تَوَسَّلَ كُلُّ عَبْدٍ

أُنِيلَ مَرَامَهُ وَ أَزَالَ ضُرَّا

bi-Aḥmada qad tawassala kullu 'abdin

un'ila marāmahu wa azāla ḍurrā

For Ahmad's intercession was sought by every servant (of God)...

That attained his goal and warded off the harms!

فَآدَمُ قَدْ تَوَسَّلَ بِالْمُقَفَّىٰ

وَ نُوحٌ بَعْدَهُ وَ هَلُمَّ جَرَّا

fa-Ādamu qad tawassala bil-muqaffā

wa Nūḥun ba'dahu wa halumma jarrā

For Adam (AS) himself beseeched (God) through the Final (prophet)...

And Nuh (AS) as well, and every prophet thereafter!

لِهَـٰذَا يَا إِلـٰهِي يَا إِلـٰهِي

أَرُومُ بِهِ الْمَطَالِبَ وَهْيَ تَتْرَا

li-hāzā yā Ilāhī ya Ilāhī

arūmu bihi l-maṭāliba wahya tatrā

Therefore (I pray): O my Lord O my Lord...

I seek my wishes through his intercession...and how many are they!

وَقَدْ عَلِمَ الْخَلَائِقُ أَنَّ طَٰهَٰ

الْـوَسِيلَةُ لِي إِمَامُ الْخَلْقِ طُرَّا

wa qad 'alima l-khalā'iqu anna Ṭāhā l-

wasīlatu lī imāmu l-khalqi ṭurrā

And all Mankind knows that Taha, my means (to God)...

Is indeed the Leader of all Creation!

وَثِقْتُ بِهِ وَ يَهْوَاهُ فُؤَادِي

وَ عَوَّدَنِي الْجَمِيلَ أَنَالَ فَخْرَا

wa thiqtu bihi wa yahwāhu fu'ādī

wa 'awwadanī l-jamīla anāla fakhrā

In him, I’ve placed my trust & my heart is in love with him....

For he always showed me goodness, and granted me honour!

وَ أَعْطَانِي الْجَزِيلَ بِكُلِّ آنٍ

وَ جَاوَرَنِي بِذَٰلِكَ نِلْتُ سِرَّا

wa a'ṭānī l-jazīla bi-kulli ānin

wa jāwaranī bi-dhālika niltu sirrā

And he always gave to me in abundance....

And blessed me with his company, by which I attained a great secret!

وَ رَافَقَنِي بِبَحْرٍ أَوْ بِبَرٍّ

وَ أَعْلَانِي عَلَىٰ الْأَقْوامِ بِرَّا

wa rāfaqanī bi-baḥrin aw bi-barrin

wa a'lānī 'alā l-aqwāmi birrā

And he accompanied me, on sea & on land...

And he raised me above all people, out of his kindness!

مُحَمَّدُ وَهْوَ رُوحُ الْحَمدِ سِرُّ

الْـوُجُودِ وَ دَافِعُ الْأَصْنَامِ كَسْرَا

Muḥammadu wa huwa rūḥu l-ḥamdi sirru l-

wujūdi, wa dāfi'u l-aṣnāmi kasrā

Muhammad! The Spirit of Praise, the Secret of Existence!

And the Destroyer of all idols!

مُحَمَّدُ مِدْفَعِي دَهْرِى وَ دِرْعِي

وَ فِي السَّرَّاءِ عُدَّتُنَا وَ ضُرَّا

Muḥammadu midfa'ī dahrī wa dir'ī

wa fī s-sarrā'i 'uddatunā wa ḍurrā

Muhammad! My Cannon & my Shield (against all enemies) forever....

And my Support, during easy & hard times!

مُحَمَّدُ سَيِّدِى كَنْزِى وَ غَوْثِي

حَبَانِي بِالْمُرَادِ وَ زَادَ مَيْرَا

Muḥammadu sayyidī kanzī wa ghawthī

ḥabānī bil-murādi wa zāda mayrā

Muhammad! My Master, My Treasure, My Helper!

Who granted me my wishes and all my needs!

شِفَائِي عِنْدَ أَمْرَاضِي وَ غَيْثِي

وَ مُسْتَنَدِي لِدَهْرِى حِينَ غَرَّا

Shifā'ī 'inda amrāḍī wa ghaythī

wa mustanadī li-dahrī ḥīna gharrā

My Cure when I am sick, he is my Support!

And the one I rely on when times get tough!

مُحَمَّدُ مَرْكَزِى وَ مَدَارُ أَمْرِى

عَلَى الْمَحْمُودِ دُنْيَائِي وَ أُخْرَىٰ

Muḥammadu markazī wa madāru amrī

'ala l-maḥmūdi dunyā’ī wa ukhrā

Muhammad! The point of my focus! The Mahmood, who I rely on....

In all my affairs, in this World & the Hereafter!

مُحَمَّدُ قُدْوَتِي وَ أَرَاهُ حَسْبِي

فَلَا زَيْدًا وَ لَا عَمْرًا وَ بَكْرَا

Muḥammadu qudwatī wa arāhu ḥasbī

falā Zaydān wa lā 'Amrān wa Bakrā

Muhammad is my Exemplar and he is sufficient for me...

And I need not Zayd or Amr or Bakr (i.e. anyone else) besides him (to guide me)!

نَدِيمِي سُنَّةُ الْمُخْتَارِ لَا لَا

عَلَى غَيْرِ الْحَدِيثِ أَرُومُ خَيْرَا

Nadīmī sunnatu l-mukhtāri lā lā

'alā ghayri l-ḥadīthi arūmu khayrā

For the Sunnah of the Chosen One is my dearest companion....

I do not seek goodness in anything other than his Words...No No!

سَأَرْفَعُهَا وَأَقْبِضُهَا جِهَارًا

عَلَىٰ ذَا فَلْيَلُمْنِي النَّاسُ طُرَّا

sa'arfa‘uhā wa aqbiduhā jihārān

‘alā dhā falyalumnī-n nāsu turrā

Therefore I will raise my hands (in prayer) & fold them (as per the Sunnah)....

And do not care if the whole world condemns me for it!

إِذَا رَضِيَ الْأَمِينُ فَلَا أُبَالِي

أَذَمَّ سِوَاهُ أَمْ أَطْرَا وَ أَطْرَا

izā raḍiya l-amīnu falā ubālī

azamma siwāhu am aṭrā wa aṭrā

Because if the Trustworthy (Prophet) is pleased with me....

Then I do not care if others condemn me or extol me!

إِذَا كَانَ النَّصِيبُ سِوَى الْمُقَفَّىٰ

فَإِنِّي لَا أَرَىٰ لِىَ الْحَظَّ دَهْرَا

Izā kāna n-naṣību siwā l-muqaffā

fa-inni lā arā lī l-ḥaẓẓa dahrā

For if my share is anything but the Final (Prophet).....

Then I see myself as an unfortunate one forever!

صَلَاةُ اللَّهِ يَتْبَعُهَا سَلَامٌ

عَلَىٰ الْمُخْتَارِ مَنْ مَوْلَاهُ أَسْرَى

Ṣalātu llāhi yatba'uhā salāmun

'alā l-mukhtāri man mawlāhu asrā

May the Blessings & Peace of Allah be upon the Chosen One...

The one taken on the (glorious) Night Journey by his Lord!

وَآلٍ ثُمَّ أَصْحَابٍ كِرَامٍ

نَجُومِ الْمُهْتَدِينَ وَلَّوْهُ نَصْرَا

wa ālin thumma aṣ’ḥābin kirāmin

nujūmu l-muhtadīna wallawhu nasrā

And upon his noble Family & Companions....

The Stars of Guidance, who supported him!

NOTE

وَ هَـٰذِهِ الْقَصِيْدَةُ قَائِلُهَا يَنَالُ مَا يَتَمَنَّى وَ كَذَلِكَ حَاكِيهَا بَفَضْلِ الْمَمْدُوحِ بِهَا صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم

Wa hāzihi l-Qasīdatu qā'iluhā yanal mā yutamanna wa kadhālika hākiha bafaḍli l-mamdūhi bihā, Sallallahu 'alayhi wa Sallam

The composer of this blessed poem, Mawlana Shaykh al-Islam Ibrahim Niasse (RA) stated that whoever recites this Qasidah will attain whatever he desires, by the Barakah of the one being praised (SAW)!

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ

الْفَاتِحِ لِمَا أُغْلِقَ وَالْخَاتِمِ لِمَا سَبَقَ

نَاصِرِ الْحَقِّ بِالْحَقِّ وَالْهَادِي إِلَىٰ صِرَاطِكَ الْمُسْتَقِيمِ

وَ عَلَىٰ آلِهِ حَقَّ قَدْرِهِ وَ مِقْدَارِهِ الْعَظِيمِ
