SUFFICIENT FOR ME IS HE & TAHA

حسبي به و بطه

A Poem by Shaykh-al-Islam Ibrahim Niasse (RA)

(From his Diwan named Miftah al Atiyyah: In the Jami Jawami’ al-Dawawin)

 

 

حَسْبِــــي بِبَــــــــــرٍّ رَءُوفٍ

Hasbī bi-Barrin Ra'ūfin

Sufficient for me is my Gracious and Compassionate Lord!

حَسْبِــــــــي بِهِ وَ كَفَانِــــــي

Hasbī bihi wa kafānī

Sufficient is He for me and enough is He for all my needs!

حَسْبِـــــــي بِـــــهِ وَ بِطَــــٰهَ

Hasbī bihi wa bi-Tāha

Sufficient is He for me and (His Prophet) Taha (SAW)

حَسْبِــــي بِشَيْخِــي التِّجَانِــي

Hasbī bi-Shaykhī-t Tijānī

Sufficient for me is my Shaykh (Ahmad) al-Tijani

قَلْبِــــــــي لَـــهُ وَ مَرَامِــــي

Qalbī lahu wa marāmī

My heart is for Him and my desire (is for Him only)!

وَ قَالَبِــــــــــي كُـــــــــلَّ آنِ

wa qālabī kulla āni

And my body too, always!

رَبِّ فَـــــــدَارِكْ عُبَيْــــــــداً

Rabbi fadārik 'ubaydān

O my Lord! Help your slave!

سُرْعَـــــــةً دُونَ تَــــــــوَانِ

sur'atan dūna tawāni

Soon without delay!

لاَ تَشْمِتَـــــــنَّ الْأَعَـــــــادِي

Lā tashmitanna-l a'ādī

Do not let my enemies rejoice!

وَ لاَ تُوَسْــــــوِسْ جَنَانِـــــي

wa lā tuwaswis janāni

And protect my heart from the whispering (of the Devil)

فَاجْعَلْ فُـــؤَادِي كَصَخْــــــرٍ

fāj'al fu'ādī ka-sakhrin

Make my heart as strong as a stone!

وَ لاَ تَضِـــــــرْهُ كَبَـــــــــانِ

wa lā tadir'hu kabāni

And not weak as a tree (that can be easily harmed)!

ﻟْﺘَﺸْﻒِ لِــي ﻛُﻞَّ ﺷَﻜْــــــﻮَﻯ وَ

Waltashfi lī kulla shakwā

So relieve me of every grievance

 وَﻟْﺘَقْضِ ﻫَـٰﺬِي ﺍلْأَﻣَﺎنِـــــي

waltaqdi hādhī-l amānī

And fulfil all my aspirations!

بِجَـــــاهِ ﺧَﻴْـــــﺮِ ﺍﻟْﺒَﺮَﺍﻳَـــــــﺎ

Bi-jāhi khayri-l barāyā

By the honour of the Best of Creation (SAW)

وَ ﺟَــﺎﻩِ ﺍﻟﺸَّﻴْـﺦِ ﺍﻟــتِــّـﺠَﺎنِـــي

wa jāhi-sh Shaykhi-t Tijāni

And the honour of the Shaykh al-Tijani!

وَ جَاهِ شَيْخِــي وَ أَصْلِـــــــي

Wa jāhi Shaykhī wa aslī

And by the honour of my Shaykh and my Origin

وَالِدِي عَالِــــي الْمَكَـــــــــانِ

wālidī 'ālī-l makāni

My honourable Father!

الْحَــــــــاجِ عَبْـــــدِ إِلَـٰـــــــهِ

Al-Hāji 'Abd-il Ilāhi

Al-Hajj Abdullahi (the slave of his God)

بَهْجَتِــــــي طُــــــولَ الْأَوَانِ

bahjatī tūla-l awāni

My pride throughout the ages!

*

مَطْلَبِــــي رُقْيَـــــا مَقَـــــــامٍ

Matlabī ruqyā maqāmin

My goal is to rise in (spiritual) rank

سُـــرْعَةً فِـــي ذَا الزَّمَـــــانِ

sur'atan fi dhā-z zamāni

Speedily in this age (of corruption)

مَطْلَبِــــي إِرْثُ أُصُـــولِــــي

matlabī irtha usūlī

My goal is to inherit (the stations of) my (spiritual) ancestors

سُــرْعَـــــةً دُونَ تَـــــــــوَانِ

sur'atan dūna tawāni

Quickly without delay!

فَلَسْــتُ أَرْضَـــىٰ سِـــوَى إِرْ

falastu ardā siwā ir

For I am not pleased with anything less than…

قَاءٍ لِأَعْلَـــــــــىٰ الْمَعَــــــانِي

qā'in li-a'lā-l ma'āni

being raised to the highest of understandings!

أَتْحِــــــفِ الْعَبْـــــدَ مُنَـــــــاهُ

At'hifi-l 'abda munā'hu

So grant this slave his wish!

إِتْحَافُكُــــــمْ قَـــــدْ كَفَانِـــــي

it'hāfukum qad kafānī

Your bounties are sufficient for me!

أَزْكَـــــى سَلاَمَــــيْ سَــــلاَمٍ

azkā salāmay salāmi

May the choicest of Salutations be

عَلَـــىٰ زَعِيـــــمِ الْجِنَـــــــانِ

'alā za'eemi-l jināni

Upon the Chief of Paradise

مِنْ بَعْــــدِ كُــــلِّ صَحَــــابٍ

min ba'di kulli sihābin

And upon all his Companions

بَعْــــــــــــدَ آلٍ كُـــــــــلَّ آنِ

ba'da ālin kulla āni

And his Family! Always!
