Smoking is Haram in the Tariqah Tijaniyyah
As-Salam Alaykum,
Recently, I noticed some Tijani brothers smoking cigarettes. Saddened by this, I share some warnings on this matter from our Masters, hoping that it will benefit all of us. Please read on:
Sahib al-Faydah Shaykh-al-Islam Ibrahim Niasse (RA) states in a famous lecture of his:
"The Scholars have differed about the ruling regarding Smoking, between Permissibility, Dislikedness, and Prohibition. But the strongest reliable opinion is that it is Prohibited.
The opinion of the Shaykh (Ahmad) al-Tijani (RA) is that it is definitelyHaram.
The Prophet (SAW) said that, 'Every intoxicating substance is Haram'. And there is no doubt that it (i.e. the cigarette) is an intoxicant.
The difference of the Ulama (regarding this issue) is due to their Ijitihad (personal research and understanding). But the Shaykh al-Tijani(RA) used to take the (Shari'ah) rules directly from the Prophet (SAW), without any intermediary, and he (i.e. Shaykh Ahmad Tijani) is the most learned of the Mujtahid (complete) scholars.
If a non-Tijani smokes, we do not say anything to him.
But if a Tijani smokes, then he has left the fold of the Tijaniyyah.
Indeed, the Shaykh (Sidi Ahmad Tijani) wrote in one of his Ijazahsthat, 'The Wird should not be given to a cigarette smoker until he leaves smoking'.
Someone asked him (i.e. Shaykh Ibrahim), 'How is it that the Wirdcan be given to a drinker but not a smoker?'
He replied:
'Because it is hoped that the wine-drinker will repent. But there is no such hope of repentance for the smoker. This is because the wine-drinker believes that drinking is Haram, but the smoker does not believe the same about smoking.
Therefore, the one who considers (a sinful matter) as Haram and the one who doesn't, are not the same.
The Tijani (disciple) should avoid cigarettes, smoking and inhaling, otherwise he is not a Tijani."
(Translated by me from a 1952-53 lecture of Shaykh-al-Islam (RA) in Nigeria, as compiled in the book Thalathu Majalis Saniyyah by Shaykh Muhammad Ghibrima)
I quote here some relevant passages from another benefecial post:
"The great sufi masters of the Tariqa Muhammadiyya all spoke out against smoking and criticized it strongly. Here are some explanations on why they considered it to be haram.
Shaykh Ahmad Tijani (d.1815), founder of the Tijaniyya. He declared Tobacco to be forbidden based on the Prophetic tradition that "All that causes a state of weakness is prohibited", and tobacco causes a state of weakness because of the smoker's addiction and dependency.
Shaykh Ahmad Tijani also demanded that smokers repent or they will not die a good death, and when one of his followers was dying, he started uttering vulgar words and was not able to say theShahadah, despite having been a pious man of much worship.
When (Shaykh) al-Tijani found out that he smoked, he said that this was why he could not utter the Shahadah on his deathbed and that he must repent immediately.
There is also a Prophetic hadith about Allah's hatred for money squandering.
And the greatest waste of money is in Tobacco
And the greatest waste of money is in Tobacco
And think about this: If tobacco makes the land on which it is planted impure, then what of the body that inhales it?" (End of quote).
I add to this that one of primary reasons why a Tijani is strictly prohibited from Smoking is that there are numerous Angels who are appointed to surround a Tijani disciple all the time. This is well-known and visible to anyone who sees the Unseen Spiritual World. Now,smoking cause great disgust to these Angels and even results in their going away.
Furthermore, many Tijanis have the Prophet (SAW) present with them in their homes and at many other times. The Awliya of this Tariqah (and other Tariqahs sometimes) are also present with them to guide or protect them (e.g. al-Hajj Umar Tal is known for protecting Tijanis against harm and some other non-Tijani Awliya are known for voluntarily guarding Tijani Zawiyahs).
Once again, cigarette smoke causes disgust and discomfort to these Pure Holy Presences, and even makes them depart.
Therefore, Tijanis should always try to smell nice. They should know that they are never alone and that there are many Holy Spirits with them, whether one sees them or not. The disciple should honor this spirituality that surrounds him.
O Tijani disciple! Don't boast nor be arrogant, but do know your own value. Don't ever undermine a Tijani murid, including yourself!
In fact, not only is it Haram for a Tijani to smoke cigarettes or inhale it, it is also Haram for a Tijani to sell it.
A Muqaddam who is a close friend of mine told me that he enquired from our venerated Imam Sayyidina Shaykh Hassan Cisse (RA) if cigarettes can be sold in the shop that is adjacent to our blessedZawiyah?
Sayyidina al-Imam Hassan Cisse (RA) replied:
"No! My grandfather Shaykh Ibrahim (RA) considered smoking asHaram, and one cannot sell Haram objects."
Al-Humduli'Llah, I hope this much will suffice for us. Those of us who are addicted to this harmful habit must strive hard to get rid of it, and it is not difficult for ALLAH to make the difficult matter easy, through thebarakah of our Shaykhs (RA).
