A BLESSED JOURNEY IN 2009

Al-HumduliLlah, in 2009, I had the
opportunity to travel to the Blessed cities of Sacred Makkah and Madinah my
home, to visit the House of Allah and more importantly the Messenger of Allah
(SAW).
As I once gain prepare to go on this
blessed journey, I thought of quickly penning down some highlights of the last
journey, in order to:
-Not forget it myself
-Inspire and inform others
-Follow the Sunnah of our Masters whose
travelogues of the Hijaz are well-known such Sayyidna Shaykh Ahmad al-Tijani
(RA) and Mawlana Shaykh Ibrahim Niyass (RA).
Some highlights I remember now are:
Makkah al-Mukarramah:
-The Hotel that was booked for us was right
next to the Blessed House where the Habib (SAW) was born.
-When we entered the Hotel, we heard very
loud Salawat being recited. Thereafter I discovered that the Syrian delegation
was having a Mawlid in the basement of the Hotel!
- We made Wazifah with Tijani Ahbab from
Makkah, while watching the Haram. One of them was a young man from a notable
Sharifian Family of Makkah, who had taken the Tariqah from me in Cape Town
during a visit. I was honored to see him again.
- Amazingly, I discovered a bookshop very
near to the Haram of Makkah that was openly selling copies of the banned in
Saudi Jawahir al-Ma’ani. I bought a copy just as a souvenir.
- The first Dua I made when I saw the Holy
Ka’bah was the Dua that Shaykh Ibrahim also made when he first saw the Ka’bah:
اللهم إني نويت أن
أتقرب إليك بالنظر إلى بيتك الحرام بالنية التي كان ينظر
بها النبي صلى الله عليه و سلم
“O Allah! I intend to draw closer to You by
looking at your Sacred House with the same intention that the Prophet (SAW)
used to look at it with”
- I recited the entire Kanz al-Awliya of
Shaykh Ibrahim (RA) facing the Sacred Door of the Ka’bah, as per the practice
of Shaykh Hassan Cisse (RA), for whom I made Dua everywhere.
- During the Sa’iy between the Safa and
Marwah mountains, we were encountered with people singing the Burdah!
Al-Madinah al-Munawwarah:
- In Madinah, I first greeted the Master of
Existence (SAW) with the same greeting that Shaykh Ibrahim (RA) first greeted
him with as mentioned in his travelogue. Thereafter, I greeted him with another
greeting of Shaykh-al-Islam (RA) mentioned in his Fayd al-Ahmadi. After that, I
would just recite the holy Sirr al-Ziyarah during my greetings.
- I made Wazifah in the Mosque of the
Prophet (SAW) with a fellow Saudi disciple of Shaykh Hassan Cisse (RA) right by
the Ahl al-Suffah Deck, facing the Noble Muhammadan Tomb. This was on the first
night and it was really amazing. No one stopped us though. This brother had
taken Tariqah from me in Cape Town during a visit.
-I visited the various Tijani Zawiyahs in
Madinah. I recall 3; one that was connected to students of the Ba’qili line,
one to the line of Shaykh al-Hafiz of Egypt (where I made Zikr-ul-Jumah), and
one large Zawiyah of Mawlana Shaykh Ibrahim’s people.
-I had the honor of meeting a Muqaddam from
Rabat of the line of Sidi al-Arabi bin al-Sa’ih (RA) in the blessed Rawdah,
sitting next to a known Medinan Muqaddam. When I met him, he recognized me
saying, “Aren’t you the South African muqaddam who gave that nice speech in the
Fez Conference!”. I was amazed that he still remembered that. I benefited from
him many things
- One evening, we were at the Zawiyah in Madinah,
and this Muqaddam was also there. In honor of his presence, the Manaqib
(Virtues) of Sidi al-Arabi bin al-Sa’ih (RA) were recited. When it was
mentioned that he (RA) was born in1229, I said, “So he got one year of Sayyidna
Shaykh’s life as Sayyidna passed away in 1230.” Everyone present liked that
point.
- We went to Ziyarah the Tijani Sharif Sidi
Zubayr bin Salim, muqaddam of the Fez Zawiyah, who was also in Madinah.
-While in Madinah, and before reaching
there as well, I continuously recited Salat-al-Fatih and the Diwan of Shaykh
Ibrahim (RA), which is full of unsurpassed praises for the Prophet (SAW) and
his City.
- When in Madinah among the countless
people present there, I asked the Prophet (SAW) to guide me to a person who
drinks from the same Tijani Ibrahimi Faydah as me, so that we could share some
secrets and experiences at the same level and understanding without any
confusions. Al-HumduliLlah, that same night I received a call from a brother
informing me that the great Arif-BiLlah and Master of Tarbiyah and Tarqiyah in
the Tijani Faydah, Sidi Shaykh Abd-Allah bin al-Hadi Fal had arrived in Madinah
and wished to see me! Shaykh Abd-Allah is the great grandson of the renowned
saint Sidi Mawlud Fal (RA), second Khalifah of Sidna Shaykh al-Tijani in
Mauritania and the second Shaykh of al-Haj Umar al-Futi (RA). His family are
noble Sharifs and Ulama. Nevertheless, they had submitted to Shaykh Ibrahim
(RA) when he appeared with the Faydah. Rather than humiliate them, this
submission of theirs turned their next generation into even greater Leaders of
the Tariqah.
- Al-HumduliLlah! I spent a lot of time in
the blessed company of Sidi Shaykh Abd-Allah in Madinah, in and outside of the
Prophetic Mosque. The last two times I had met him were in Fez and Kaolack.
This time, we talked about Shaykh Hassan Cisse (RA) and what his loss meant for
the Tijani Faydah, stories of Shaykh Abd-Allah’s forefathers, his own story of
taking the Bay’ah from Mawlana Shaykh Ibrahim (RA) and the Tarbiyah from Saydi
Ali Cisse (RA) and soo many other beneficial things.
- Most beneficial of all was his opening
the doors of Tarqiyah for me. This is a level after the Tarbiyah and I was
searching for someone to guide me to this and spiritually beseeching Shaykh
Hassan (RA) to guide me. There were many passages I was reading in some of the
works of Shaykh Ibrahim (RA), particularly the Jawahir al-Rasa’il and the
concealed al-Sirr al-Akbar that were too deep for me to understand and I could
not decipher their exact meanings. Subhan-Allah! While sitting in front of the
Noble Muhammadan Tomb, Shaykh Abd-Allah queried me on those exact passages! He
asked me if I understood them?. I was dumbfounded and said that I am to learn
from him.
He said, “Most people stop at the Tarbiyah
and do not continue in the Tarqiyah after that, and that is the reason why some
brothers end up leaving the Tariqah or it’s Faydah.” He said, “I have been
given a sign to instruct you in this Knowledge for you will need to understand
the works of Shaykh Ibrahim as many are not understanding.” I never had the courage
to ask him what sign he talked about. Nevertheless, throughout my sojourn with
him I felt as if it was no one but Shaykh Hassan Cisse (RA) who was teaching.
Indeed, when I was last in Kaolack, Imam Hassan (RA) had personally signed my
copy of the Jawahir al-Rasa’il and wrote on it that, “May you understand the
words of Shaykh-al-Islam and benefit from them”. One day, while thinking of
that, Shaykh Abd-Allah said, “We all drink from the Imam”.
-For the next few days, I stayed in the
company of Shaykh Abd-Allah, attending Wazifahs and Suppers with him, seeking
his instructions. Then on one blessed night, he called me up to his room and
told everyone to leave and locked the Doors. Thereupon he told me to sit,
listen, understand and question. That night, the Shaykh opened up the secrets
of the Tarqiyah for this worthless slave, particularly concerning the Hadarat,
Haqa’iq, Dawa’ir, Mazahir, Maratib, Tajalliyat, Azalat, Abadat, Raka’at, Asma,
Sifat and Nisab. The details of these cannot be revealed here.
The Discussion and Instruction went on from
after Esha till Fajr. Al-HumduliLlah, much was unlocked that night. Those
passages that I had difficulty in understanding became very clear and obvious.
The benefit of this Knowledge is that the Qur’an and Hadith also become more
clear and understandable. All one can say is Al-HumduliLlah for this Tijani
Tariqah!
- Then that morning, we had honor of a
recitation of the Jawahir al-Ma’ani in my home in Madinah after Salat al-Duha.
This was when I invited Shaykh Abd-Allahi Fal for breakfast at our home. Shaykh
Abd-Allah requested that I read the part where Mawlana al-Qutb al-Maktum (RA)
describes how the Opening of Ma’rifah occurs. He said, “Subhan-Allah! Others
read this part only, while every follower of Sahib al-Faydah experiences this
in Tarbiyah!”. We all said, “Al-HumduliLlah”!
- I lost my shoes in the Prophetic Mosque
in Madinah. I said, “Al-HumduliLlah”, because Shaykh Ibrahim (RA) had mentioned
the loss of shoes as being a sign of the acceptance of the Ziyarah!
- In Madinah, as usual, I noticed that the
Prophet (SAW) was fulfilling every single request we had, even as small as
thinking of a cup of Tea of a certain type of food. Someone from somewhere
would soon bring it to us, without any request. I experienced the same in Fez,
with Mawlana Shaykh al-Tijani (RA).
Jeddah:
- I also had the honor of performing the
Hadrat al-Jum’ah with the Tijani group in Jeddah. These are mostly well-off
Saudis, and mostly connected to the Line of Sahib al-Faydah. I read for them
the Manaqib al-Tijani I had brought from Indonesia. Some brothers had questions
regarding some issues in the Tariqah. I explained the matter to them to the
best of my knowledge. Many of these brothers were originally followers of other
Turuq but had now submitted to the Tijaniyyah.
- We also made Wazifah at the home of
another Sharifian brother in Jeddah. He had the whole Salat-ul-Fatih carved on
the Gate of his Villa! Shaykh Abd-Allah Fal was also present there. He
requested that Mawlana Shaykh al-Tijani’s statement about the Faydah must be
read directly from the Ifadah al-Ahmadiyyah, which the brother possessed. We
read that part, and then the Shaykh explained the emergence of the Faydah and
what had happened then, as his father Sidi al-Hadi bin Mawlud Fal had witnessed
it all.
- In Jeddah, I also managed to get three
books of the Tariqah I was searching for a long time:
1-Rawd Shama’il Ahl
al-Haqiqah by Ibn-Mahamm al-Alawi, the earliest encyclopedia of Tijani Saints.
2-The Biography of Shaykh
Umar al-Futi (RA) by Shaykh Muhammad al-Hafiz of Egypt (RA).
3-Sirah of the Prophet
(SAW) by al-Hajj Malick Sy (RA).
These were gifted by one
dear brother who lives there.
- I also did a Complete Dars of the Burdah
in Jeddah by the request of brothers from the Qadiriyyah Tariqah. This was
attended by around 100 people and was a great success.
- Shaykh Mawlay Abd-Allah Fal told me that
it was difficult to talk of the Secret Knowledge in this Land of the Hijaz.
This was because of what Shaykh Ibrahim (RA) mentioned in his Travelogue that
he wanted to reveal some secrets during his Hajj, but Shaykh Ahmad Tijani (RA)
appeared to him and told him not to:
لكنما
الشيخ التجاني حضرا
معي
و ما أحب
بثي دررا
Indeed, the Hijaz is the land of the
Manifestation of the Zahir of Muhammad (SAW). One must simply spend the time
there in showing Adab to that Zahir. The Batin al-Haqiqah al-Muhammadiyyah may
be experienced in the heart but not talked about openly. I understood what
Shaykh Hassan (RA) had replied to my brother when he asked him in Madinah, “You
have the Prophet (SAW) with you in Senegal every day so why travel to
Madinah?”. Shaykh Hassan (RA) had told him, “To Visit his Tomb and Pray in his
Mosque, may Allah’s peace and blessing be upon him.” Or as Shaykh Ibrahim (RA)
said, “I wish to see the sights that Muhammad (SAW) used to see and walk the
lands he used to walk.”
Al-HumduliLlah, many many other things also
happened there during that blessed visit. I cannot count them all now. It was
just one blessing and after another, one Karamah after another. The Hospitably
of Sayyidna Rasul-Allah (SAW) knows no bound for his lovers. Indeed, we did not
take any step in that Visit – from beginning till end -without the explicit
permission of Sayyid al-Wujud himself (SAW) Dhalika Fadl-Allahi Yutihi Man
Yasha.
I left beloved Madinah singing these lines
of Shaykh Ibrahim (RA):
و
إن سألوا قد زرتم القرم عاقبا
و
هل أتحف الزوار منه مواهبا
أقول ملا سراً و روحاً و
كلكلاً
و
حتى ملا
أكياسنا و الحقائبا
And if they ask; You have
visited the noble Final Prophet?
So did he shower his
visitors with his gifts?
I will reply; Indeed, he
filled our hearts, souls and chests!
And he even filled our Bags
and Cases!
Indeed, our erstwhile empty bags were
bulging with fullness on the return flight. Upon our return, I discovered that
even our entire expenses for the journey were repaid by the Hadrah in an
unbelievable way that I don’t have time to elaborate on here.
Now once again, the Call has come and we
go…to fulfill our purpose of existence, to walk in the footsteps of the Beloved
of God…the Beginning and End of Creation (SAW).
